Books by the Sea is the initiative of Northumberland farmer Guy Douglas who was inspired by the Free Little Libraries movement which began in the USA to grown a network of little free libraries that rest on the simple maxim of “Leave a Book! Take a Book!”. The little libraries are strung along the North Northumberland coast from Warkworth to Berwick upon Tweed and are expanding along the River Tweed.
Working with Guy, I commissioned filmmaker Jason Thompson to create a film showcasing the community custodians of the little libraries and featuring some of the writing in 'Forecast', the first Books by the Sea publication designed by the Old School Gallery.
Following the Covid lockdown, we created a free community weekend at Low Mill Farm in Embleton including film screenings in a derelict barn and a pop-up public library.
