The 2018 programme featured larger sculpture installations across the grounds by Qi Ya Feng, Simon Hitchens and Louise Plant and a focus on materiality, and across the gardens we began to programme more experimental performance pieces with site specific dance installations by Lizzie Klotz and Maria Vincentelli.
Peter Hanmar realised his proposal for the second Gillian Dickinson North East Young Sculptor of the Year award with his 'Plato’s Lair' installation in the Potting Shed which drew upon the Plato’s ‘The Allegory of The Cave’.
In the Stables Gallery I wanted to present exhibitions which explored the process's of making sculpture, and the two solo shows contrasted experimental 3D printing by Joseph Hillier with the hand-hammered stainless steel forms of Qi Ya Feng, who I had worked with at Today Art Museum in Beijing when i curated his first solo exhibition in 2017.
