Anish Kapoor's Temenos is the centrepiece of the reimagining of Middlehaven, a post industrial site which had stood derelict for over 25 years. My role was to work between the artist, client and funders, to develop the artists brief, support the design development stages and to navigate the project through the challenges of a large scale arts commission within a wider programme of regeneration. The project was the vision of Joe Docherty who led Tees Valley Regeneration and was proposed as one of a series of 'giant' arts commissions across the Tees Valley.
Anish worked closely with engineer Cecil Balmond whose team from ARUP brought fantastic design skills to achieve the artists vision, scale and form, and in parallel to the design stage we were able to run engineering led workshops with over 600 local school children and Teesside University over two years. We worked with Mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art present an exhibition presenting a range of Anish Kapoor's sculpture in 2009.
The project took around 6 years to complete from initial site visits through the concept and technical design stages to installation and is the biggest project I have curated to date. Temenos opened in 2010 and attracted funding from a range of public and private sector supporters including Middlesbrough Football Club, and each matchday thousands of fans walk under Temenos to get to the Riverside Stadium.
